In Dune: Awakening sandworms will serve as a natural force rather than tools players can summon at will. Unlike Frank Herbert's novels, where characters could call upon worms using a thumper, this mechanic won't be available in the game.

According to the developers, sandworms are NPCs with their own patrol routes, schedules, and behaviors built into the game engine. Players won’t be able to summon a worm near an enemy base to create additional problems for opponents. However, if a sandworm happens to be nearby, it’s possible to attract its attention—such as by moving actively through the sand or using a thumper. Still, these actions don’t guarantee the worm’s appearance in the area.
Riding sandworms, as depicted in Herbert’s books and popularized by the Freman culture, won’t be possible in Dune: Awakening The developers cited pressure from the filmmakers behind the Dune cinematic universe as the reason for omitting this feature.

That said, post-launch patches may introduce more content tied to Freman culture, potentially including worm-riding mechanics. For now, though, there’s no guarantee that players will get to experience this iconic activity.

Dune: Awakening launches on PC on May 20th, with console versions following later.
