In Ghost of Yotei, players will gain access to an expanded arsenal of weapons, but the katana will remain the cornerstone of combat. Creative director Jason Connell confirmed that while the variety of armaments will refresh the gameplay experience, the core mechanics will stay true to the essence of samurai cinema.

The game introduces new tools such as the kusarigama (a sickle-and-chain weapon), the yari spear, the odachi (a large sword), and firearms. However, as Nate Fox emphasized, the katana remains the most prized weapon:

Mastery of the blade is an integral part of samurai storytelling. We wanted to preserve that feeling while deepening the player's connection to their weapon and the world.

Players will encounter trainers across Ezo (modern-day Hokkaido) to master these new weapons in a manner reminiscent of classic samurai films. Connell added that each weapon type will offer unique tactical advantages, encouraging players to adapt their strategies.

The inspiration for Ghost of Yotei draws heavily from Akira Kurosawa’s film The Bodyguard. According to Fox, the wandering swordsman archetype served as the foundation for the protagonist Atsu’s character.
