Spectre Divide had been making headlines since one of the key figures involved in its development was the well-known streamer and former esports pro Shroud. Unfortunately, a big name doesn't always translate into a successful project. Today, Mountaintop Studios announced its closure and the upcoming shutdown of the shooter’s servers.

The studio itself will cease to exist by the end of this week, while the servers will remain online for just under a month. During this time, the studio will refund players for their purchases. The game failed to attract a large enough audience or generate enough revenue to keep running.

It's easy to sigh at yet another unsuccessful project, but this only highlights how difficult it is to break into the live-service game market. And let’s be honest—Spectre Divide didn’t introduce anything groundbreaking or revolutionary enough to make players flock to it. Even Shroud’s popularity and esports background weren’t enough to ensure success. The reality is that there’s a huge gap between top-tier players and casual gamers, with completely different priorities.

In the end, another esports-driven idea has fallen short in the world of game development. Press F to pay respects.
