For the second season of The Last of Us, HBO’s production team recreated Joel’s house in striking detail. Even though the house is barely shown in the actual episodes, the set designers didn’t cut corners. In a new behind-the-scenes video by Sony, fans are treated to a guided tour of Joel’s home—both the interior and exterior versions.
The interior was built entirely inside a soundstage, with attention to even the smallest items that might hint at Joel’s life before his demise. For external shots, the crew filmed at a real house in Canada, carefully selected to match the tone and style of the show’s visual narrative.
Interestingly, the production team noted how surreal it felt to design and shoot a space connected to a character who had already died in the storyline. Still, the house stands as one of the most elaborate sets created for a deceased character.
Episode 4 of season 2 is set to air on May 5. In the latest aired episode, Ellie returns to Jackson months after Joel’s death, preparing herself for a fateful journey in pursuit of Abby.
