Three years of silence, two rewritten scripts, and zero progress — this is the grim reality of the adaptation of the famous Tomb Raider franchise.
Chronicle of Stagnation:
- In 2019, Amazon signed a multi-million dollar contract with screenwriter Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny), but work has been stalled ever since;
- The script was rewritten twice — first due to "misalignment with the spirit of Lara Croft", then because of conflicting visions between the studio and the writers;
- Even the contract extension with Waller-Bridge in 2023 failed to give the project momentum.
Insiders note: the problem isn’t just the script. Amazon, known for its endless revisions (as seen with The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power), clearly can’t settle on a concept.
Three Possible Scenarios Ahead:
- Quiet Cancellation — If Amazon doesn’t see potential, the project could be scrapped, as happened with Constantine;
- Reboot with a New Screenwriter — Similar to Fallout, where original showrunner Jonathan Nolan stepped aside for others;
- Unexpected Breakthrough — Following the path of The Last of Us, which waited 10 years for adaptation.
For now, Tomb Raider remains in limbo — caught between Amazon’s ambitions and the harsh realities of film production. For fans, this is especially bitter: the franchise already suffered a failed film reboot with Alicia Vikander, and another failure could spell the end for future adaptations.
