In recent years, the possibility of a sequel to The Last of Us has been widely discussed online. Despite the mixed reception of the second installment, many players hoped that Naughty Dog would address the shortcomings in The Last of Us Part III or offer fans a new expansion of the universe in the form of a spin-off. However, Neil Druckmann made a statement that came as a surprise even to the most devoted fans of the franchise.

The head of Naughty Dog and screenwriter Craig Mazin gave a joint interview in which they discussed the adaptation of the game series from Naughty Dog, as well as the games themselves. In particular, Druckmann shared his feelings after the release of the sequel during COVID-19: how he felt unwell at the time, fixated on various things, and how things got worse when he was left alone to think about something—especially when he had the internet at hand. That’s when it got the worst, as the developer read reviews and debates about his game and began to doubt—maybe he really had made a piece of garbage, ruining everything?

When Druckmann was asked about a potential third installment, he sighed and replied that he had been expecting this question. However, the only thing he could say was that people shouldn’t count on a new The Last of Us, as this might be the end.
