According to published job listings, the studio is currently looking for game designers with experience in developing online action games and level design for online or open-world games.
This is both amusing and sad, given that the studio's first live-service game, Babylon's Fall, was a spectacular failure. While its debut trailer at least sparked some intrigue, the first player testing revealed that nearly everything about the game was poorly executed. Babylon's Fall was incredibly dull, and there was simply no desire to play it for more than an hour or two.
Surprisingly, the game even made it to release, where it faced abysmal sales and a correspondingly low player count. This led to a rapid decline in concurrent players, at one point dropping to single digitsāuntil, at some point, literallyĀ oneĀ person remained playing. And then they, too, left.
Naturally, under such circumstances, there was no point in maintaining the game's servers, which were shut down less than a year after launch. Meanwhile, major retail stores began pulling physical copies of the game from shelves.
In this context, it's completely unclear what Platinum Games is hoping for. Perhaps the studio will use the negative experience of Babylon's Fall to create a much better live-service game this time. Some developers argue that the game did have interesting gameplay mechanics buried beneath battle passes, premium currency, and the constraints of its genreāmechanics players simply never got to experience. But as of now, thereās little confidence in the success of this new live-service venture.
