For quite some time now, fans have been trying to decipher the meaning behind the mysterious photos with captions that James finds throughout the Silent Hill 2 Remake. Now we have an officially confirmed solution.

On October 3, a Reddit user posted a solution to this mystery. By counting objects in each photo and matching the number with a letter from the caption, he uncovered a hidden message. Mateusz Lenart, creative director, has confirmed that the solution to the puzzle is correct, but the theory behind it was left without comments. Spoilers for the Silent Hill series ahead — you've been warned.

In one of the photos, you can see six windows, with the phrase “So many people here.” The fan extracted the sixth letter, "Y," from this combination. By repeating the same process with other photos he managed to form a 26-letter message: “You’ve been here for two decades.”

Fans believe this hidden message is unlikely to be a coincidence and have proposed two possible explanations. Either the developers subtly acknowledged that the original game was released over 20 years ago, or they confirmed a longstanding theory.

This theory suggests a time loop, where James is trapped in Silent Hill, continuously reliving the game’s events. In such an interpretation, the remake is not just a remake but can even be considered a continuation of the series.

Hints of a time loop are also found in other series entries. James’s father appears in the fourth game, and it’s mentioned that James and his fiancée went missing in Silent Hill.
