Sometimes even the most sacred places on Earth seek distraction — especially during stressful times. For example, after the death of the Pope and before the conclave. According to Devolver Digital, on April 25 — four days after the Pope’s passing and right before his funeral — a copy of Cult of the Lamb was purchased in the Vatican. This marks the first officially recorded sale of the game in the mini-state.

Perhaps a Vatican resident was intrigued by the game’s unique visual style, or maybe someone acquired it to analyze its themes from a religious perspective. Jokingly, the developers of Cult of the Lamb remarked that someone in the Vatican now definitely knows how to behave during a conclave. Spoiler: tentacles and eliminating rivals are involved.
This isn’t the first time the Vatican has shown interest in video games. Previous reports revealed that at least two copies of Baldur’s Gate 3 had been purchased, with another listed on a wishlist. The themes of both titles are far removed from traditional doctrine — featuring magic, cults, and mystical elements that clearly diverge from the Catholic Church’s official stance.
