Amid ongoing testing of the upcoming Battlefield, which has yet to receive an official title, players have spotted signs of SBMM (skill-based matchmaking). Concerns quickly spread across the community, prompting producer David Sirland to offer clarification on the matter.

DICE explains matchmaking system in the next BattlefieldImage: gamegpu.com According to Sirland, skill-based matchmaking has been part of the series for years, including in Battlefield 2042. However, the main factors in matchmaking continue to be ping and match start speed. While player skill is taken into account, it plays a secondary role in server distribution. The core focus is to fill a 64-player match as quickly as possible, not to balance teams with pinpoint precision.

Sirland emphasized that the system is far less rigid than what players experience in other shooters. DICE's intention is not to separate players strictly by experience level. Chaos and unpredictability are key to the Battlefield experience, and SBMM is only there to support rough team balance when assembling random matches.

Although SBMM isn't new, its presence caused a stir. Meanwhile, rumors suggest the return of class specializations from Battlefield 4 in the new project.
