DOOM: The Dark Ages, the latest installment in the iconic DOOM series, has dropped its release trailer, reminding fans that the game will launch next week. At the same time, the first reviews have emerged, providing a mix of praise with a few reservations.

Set in a dark fantasy world, DOOM: The Dark Ages brings the same fast-paced action, albeit with a more tactical approach than its predecessor, DOOM Eternal. While the gameplay has slowed down, critics have noted that the title retains its intense energy but introduces a more methodical and "darkly stylish" combat style.

Reviewers have appreciated the game's departure from the formula of Eternal, offering a fresh focus on melee combat, blocking, and parrying with shields. These mechanics have contributed to a combat system that feels dynamic yet grounded and aggressive. The story focuses on the origins of the Doom Slayer, expanding the DOOM universe with deeper lore, new locations, including Lovecraft-inspired environments, and the addition of human characters.

However, not all reviewers were fond of the expanded levels, which now require players to explore and solve puzzles, in addition to engaging in combat. Yet, as some critics have pointed out, once players accept exploration as part of the experience, the overall design begins to feel more cohesive.

DOOM: The Dark Ages is set to release on May 15 for PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PS5. Players who purchase the Premium Edition for $100 can start playing on May 13.
