11 bit studios has officially revealed Frostpunk 1886, the long-teased secret project set in the Frostpunk universe. Scheduled for release in 2027, this remake of the original title is being developed on Unreal Engine 5, promising a new level of visual and gameplay enhancements.

In addition to graphical upgrades, Frostpunk 1886 will expand the game mechanics, including an all-new third development path. The remake will also introduce fresh events, technologies, laws, and buildings, enriching the city-building survival formula that made the series popular.

Returning to the origins of the franchise, the game places players in an alternate version of 1886, just as the Great Storm descends upon New London. While maintaining the atmosphere of harsh survival and difficult moral decisions, the developers have added what they call a new “Purpose Path” storyline to provide a unique narrative experience.

Another major innovation is full mod support, something previously unattainable due to the limitations of the original Liquid Engine. With Unreal Engine 5, Frostpunk 1886 becomes a fully extendable platform capable of future expansions and community-driven content.

Meanwhile, the studio continues development on The Alters, a survival game about a man forced to create clones of himself to survive. That title recently received a confirmed release date.
