People love to celebrate anniversaries of iconic games. After Valve released a documentary film which brought to tears some hardcore fans, many players decided to return to City 17. Half-Life 2 has broken its all-time player count record on Steam this weekend. In honor of the twenty years milestone, Valve made the iconic shooter temporarily free, added over three hours of developer commentary, and introduced other updates.
Steam player count data has been available since 2008, and before now, Half-Life 2 had never surpassed 64,000 concurrent players. The previous record was 16,100 players, set in August 2021. However, it's impossible to determine how many Steam users played the game at its original release.
Of course, the current number is nowhere around classic multiplayer hits from Valve, like Dota 2 or Counter-Strike 2, but it is still mind-blowing if we think about 64 000 players enjoying a game that is twenty years old.
Let's hope that it motivates Valve to eventually release the next Half-Life game. Of course, this will happen when the game is done. You can't escape Valve time.
