Nintendo’s anticipated Mario Kart World took the spotlight during the newest Direct, showcasing exclusive gameplay and revealing major gameplay innovations tailored for the Nintendo Switch 2. This is set to be the franchise’s most expansive entry yet.

The game redefines Mario Kart’s traditional structure with an open-world design. Racers are now free to veer off circuits, traverse the environment, and explore on their own terms. Players can engage in free driving or hunt down fresh racing opportunities scattered across the map.

Each Grand Prix now consists of a series of interconnected tracks, offering a more immersive and dynamic progression. A new race type — rally — spans the entire world map, tasking players with reaching checkpoints efficiently in sprawling, point-to-point competitions.

Fresh techniques have been introduced to elevate the racing experience. The Charge Jump lets players vault over terrain obstacles. Certain routes shift the action from roads to narrow ledges and rails. Notably, wall-riding enables racers to cling to vertical paths, offering daring shortcut options.

Mario Kart World hits stores on June 5 alongside the highly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2.
