After weeks of silence, Grinding Gear Games has addressed rising concerns surrounding Path of Exile 2, which recently saw its Steam reviews plunge into "mostly negative" territory. In response, the developers have announced a major rework of the game’s loot system. According to the team, update 0.2.0g—releasing on May 2—will bring significant changes to how monsters drop gear, addressing long-standing complaints about underwhelming item rewards.

In Path of Exile 2, the system leans heavily on Rarity rather than Quantity, with the intention of limiting loot spam. However, many felt this emphasis failed to deliver quality gear consistently.
For instance, a monster with +2 loot and 300% rarity—especially those afflicted or linked to past kills—should theoretically produce better gear. Yet in practice, players often receive underwhelming or irrelevant items. The developers admitted that their drop protection measures weren’t enough to counter unlucky RNG rolls.
The revised system boosts the influence of rarity, while also adding more protective rules to ensure players receive at least one worthwhile item when odds aren’t in their favor. This change is expected to improve both solo and group play experiences across the board.
