Sony has made a real innovation in its activities. The Japanese electronics giant, known for creating games, manufacturing various equipment, films, and music, is planning to enter the automotive industry. At the CES 2024 exhibition, an electric car from Sony was first presented, which can be controlled using a regular PlayStation 5 gamepad.

The Afeela EV electric car was first introduced in 2020. It is jointly developed with Honda and equipped with huge touch screens and smart sensors capable of tracking the car's position in real-time and objects around it. AFEELA is fitted with an autopilot, powered by 45 sensors, cameras, and LiDAR.

On the front panel of the electric car, there is a large display, and additional screens are located in the cabin, including in front of the rear seats.

Initially, the concept was supposed to have a dual-motor all-wheel drive with 400 kW (536 hp) power, acceleration to 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds, and a top speed of 240 km/h. It is noted that Sony is still aiming for these characteristics.

The cars will be available in various configurations, but each, even the most affordable version, will be equipped with a built-in PS5. The Afeela EV will also have an alternative control feature. Anyone will be able to control the car using a standard DualSense gamepad from PlayStation 5. It was also announced that it will soon be available in the Gran Turismo game.

During the presentation, Yasuhide Mizuno, CEO of Sony Honda Mobility Inc., drove the car onto the stage using a PS5 controller, but noted that this was done only for demonstration purposes.

Sony promises that the software-defined nature of the car will turn it into a "digital gaming playground". The company showcased a game where the vehicle is displayed inside a fantasy simulation, and its passengers are Godzilla-like escaped monsters, catching which can earn points.

Orders for AFEELA will start in 2025, and production is set to begin in 2026. Sony plans to release a sedan and a crossover.
