The latest developer diary for Subnautica 2 offers fans a first look at gameplay and confirms plans for an early access release later this year. Although the exact date remains under wraps, players can expect redesigned base building mechanics, brand-new tools, and a more dangerous ocean full of new biomes and threats.

A major innovation is the introduction of multiplayer — a first for the Subnautica franchise. Players will now be able to explore the alien waters solo or team up with up to three others. The new map will feature reimagined survival mechanics, including an overhauled resource gathering system and a more dynamic ecosystem.

One of the notable changes is the shift from random resource drops to clearly defined "resource nodes." Additionally, the inventory system may now display exact quantities of collected materials, even down to hundredths.

The devlog also showcased a brief glimpse of a mysterious “slime” whose DNA can apparently enhance the protagonist, along with previews of a new leviathan creature and updated underwater life behavior.

Subnautica 2 has transitioned from Unity to Unreal Engine 5. It’s planned for release on PC via Steam and EGS, and Xbox Series consoles after a 2–3 year early access phase. No Russian localization is planned at this time.
