The Witcher 4's NPC development will be elevated to previously unheard-of levels by CD Projekt Red. Following criticism of Cyberpunk 2077's NPC mechanics and The Witcher 3's stereotypical characters, the company plans to build a world that is truly alive.

In an interview, game director Sebastian Kalemba shared the details of the new approach:

“We have a rule: every NPC should look like they are living their own life with their own story.”

This concept can be seen in the first trailer, which shows the isolated village of Stromford. The villagers follow superstitions, worshipping a forest god. One scene shows a girl with a wreath of twigs praying in the gloomy forest until Ciri shows up to fight a monster.

“We aim to make NPCs as realistic as possible - from appearance to facial expressions and behavior. This will create an even deeper immersion than before. We're really trying to set a new bar for quality.”

According to the developers, each village and character will be endowed with unique features and stories, reflecting the superstitions and cultural peculiarities of isolated regions.

The Witcher 4 is scheduled for release in 2025, and fans are eagerly awaiting more details on how the game will reimagine its approach to world and character creation.
