The Until Dawn movie, based on the hit interactive horror game from Supermassive Games, is hitting theaters April 25—but critics are already weighing in. With a Metacritic score of 53/100 from 10 reviews, the reception is very much mixed.

Directed by David F. Sandberg (known for Shazam!), the film follows a group of teens who return to a remote lodge to honor a missing friend—only to find themselves trapped in a deadly time loop.

Some reviewers enjoyed the ride, calling it a decent video game adaptation. Others weren’t impressed, criticizing the film’s predictable story, shallow characters, and overuse of horror clichĂ©s. Despite a solid cast, many felt the characters lacked the depth seen in the original game.

Writers Blair Butler and Gary Dauberman, both experienced in the horror genre, were unable to craft a compelling or cohesive plot, according to reviewers. Still, critics acknowledged Sandberg’s effort to inject creativity—especially in scenes where the characters die in different gruesome ways, from slasher attacks to supernatural threats.

While the film may not break new ground, it might work as a casual horror watch—just don’t expect it to stick the landing for everyone.
