Overwatch 2, Blizzard's team-based game, continues to evolve. In Season 11, developers plan to remove the Hero Mastery Gauntlet mode, introduced in September 2023, as it failed to gain popularity among players.
Hero Mastery Gauntlet was a cooperative version of the Hero Mastery mode, where teams of three defended towers against enemy waves, competing for high scores. Despite an intriguing concept, the gameplay didn't resonate, and it received little recognition. Most players preferred other activities.
Removing Hero Mastery Gauntlet is part of ongoing changes in Overwatch 2. Developers have previously abandoned other new additions like the skill tree PvE mode and heroic missions, which lasted only three missions, disappointing some fans.
Developers will focus on supporting successful mechanics like seasonal cycles and new monetization plans through battle passes and an overhauled cosmetic shop.
The removal of Hero Mastery Gauntlet shows Blizzard's attentiveness to player feedback and willingness to make changes for optimization. Whether to expect new updates and modes remains to be seen.
