Randy Pitchford himself announced this on X. However, the game wasn't delayed—it was moved up from September 23 to September 12, 2025. The reason wasn't specified, but it's possible Gearbox is trying to avoid competition with Marathon and Ghost of Yotei, which could hurt sales.
Under different circumstances, fans would be thrilled about getting the game sooner, but in this case, many wouldn’t mind a longer delay—far more than just 11 days. One of the main reasons is the criticism surrounding the design of the new Vault Hunters, the central playable characters. It's worth noting that the character roster has never pleased everyone, but past games at least had some standout personalities (a pair of robots, including CL4P-TP, the psychotic Krieg, Zer0, and even Handsome Jack). In Borderlands 4, however, there’s nobody particularly memorable. Not only are all the heroes human, but they also look utterly generic.
Shortly after the game’s initial reveal, fans began questioning why the main characters’ designs were so bland, why there wasn’t a single alien among them (though, to be fair, the series has never had playable aliens, even with Zer0’s mysterious appearance), and why the other characters in the trailer (villains and NPCs) looked infinitely more interesting.

A new State of Play has been scheduled for April 30, which will be entirely dedicated to the fourth installment in the series. The chances are slim, but perhaps during this presentation—or by the time of release—the heroes will get at least some kind of redesign.
