In February 2025, a new installment of the famous Monster Hunter franchise was released, proudly titled Wilds. Some players loved it, while others were less impressed, as the project has, as they say, become more casual.

Nevertheless, it’s worth noting that several new mechanics have been introduced, and these are exactly what I’ll be examining in this article!

New Monsters

Of course, I’ll start with the monsters. It would be strange if Wilds didn’t introduce new creatures. They’re here, and that’s great. Below is a list so you can familiarize yourself with these fascinating beasts:

  • Ajarakan
  • Arkveld
  • Chatacabra
  • Doshaguma
  • Guardian Arkveld
  • Balahara
  • Guardian Doshaguma
  • Hirabami
  • Guardian Fulgur Anjanath
  • Guardian Ebony Odogaron
  • Jin Dahaad
  • Guardian Rathalos
  • Lala Barina
  • Nu Udra
  • Quematrice
  • Uth Duna
  • Zoh Shia
  • Xu Wu
  • Rey Dau
  • Rompopolo

They’re all different, each with their own unique traits. Some will be tougher, while others are easier.

Hook Slinger

This unique tool can make a hunter’s life easier. Here’s what it can do:

  • Gather items, even while mounted on a rideable bird.
  • Set traps for monsters, such as causing rockfalls on them.
  • Swing using Wedge Beetles to move around and climb faster.
  • Personally, this handy gadget has saved me more than once.

Now we come to the rideable companion, which I absolutely adore because it is incredibly useful: it takes you where you need to go, rescues you mid-battle, climbs mountains, and lets you switch between your main and secondary weapon (and vice versa).

Weather and Environment

Players may encounter Inclemency. This is a phenomenon where the weather changes—and not for the better. How can you tell? If a storm is raging or lightning flashes during a thunderstorm, then you’ve definitely witnessed Inclemency.

Focus Mode

Monsters can sustain injuries, which are, of course, inflicted by the player. Hitting these wounded spots deals better and more effective damage—weakening the creature and making it die faster. But for precise hits, you can use Focus Mode.

Attack Deflection

Now, players can use their weapons to deflect monster attacks. However, not all weapons can do this—only those with Perfect Guards.

Offset Attacks

Another feature in Monster Hunter Wilds—or rather, not so much a feature as a special move. These can force any enemy creature to flinch after building up damage with the said move.

Weapon Switching

Yes, hunters now have two weapon types—primary and secondary—which can be swapped while mounted on a rideable companion. Above, I’ve attached a link to an article where I explained in detail how to switch between primary and secondary weapons.

NPC Helpers

If you don’t want to play online and need help slaying monsters, NPCs can assist. You won’t have to control them yourself.

For details on how to send an SOS signal, I’ve covered it thoroughly here.

Quest Activation via Monster Attack

A player can receive a quest by dealing significant damage to a passing monster. That said, nothing stops you from first accepting the quest from Alma and then setting out to hunt.

Temporary Camps

Now, players in Monster Hunter Wilds can set up camps in certain map locations—but they’ll only be temporary.

Automatic Inventory Collection

All dropped items will automatically go into the character’s pouch.

Talking Palico

Yes, your furry companion can now speak human language (though in the settings, you can set them to speak their own language).

Talking Protagonist

Not only the Palico speaks—the main character does too! Can you believe it?! But honestly, the dialogue is bland and uninteresting, so I often skip it.

These were the key and most exciting changes in Monster Hunter Wilds. Some make gameplay easier, while others make it more engaging. Either way, if you’re a fan of the series (or just want to try it), many of these new features will help you adapt to the game faster.
