Mio and Zoe are the main characters of the game Split Fiction, and we immerse ourselves in their ideas throughout the game. However, to deepen the storyline and reveal the characters from a different angle, the developers chose an unusual tactic—the use of the subconscious.

Hydras embody the fears of one of the main characters, and they also serve as bosses we must face. In this article, we’ll discuss the mechanics of the battle and offer some tips to help you progress.

Who are the Hydras?

If Dark Mio represented Mio’s fears, the Hydras reflect Zoe’s traumatic past, which she endured. Having witnessed her sister's death at a very young age, Zoe convinced herself that she was responsible for her sister's demise. She emotionally scarred herself to the point that she created the Hydras, which slowly destroyed her from the inside. And it’s on this level that we encounter them.

The Battle

The beginning of this boss fight differs slightly from the previous ones. While Mio and Zoe stood on the same platform, directly facing the bosses, this time they are separated. We’ve broken the battle down into three phases to make it easier to navigate. Overall, each phase is similar to the last, so you won’t see significant differences. We won’t focus on the types of obstacles players must overcome but will concentrate solely on the boss’s attacks.

Phase One

The first mechanic we’ll focus on is the fire attack. While you’re navigating obstacles, slime will fall on the ground, with the drop location being highlighted in advance. It’s better to wait for it to fall rather than rushing and dying, which will make you start the level over. This is what it looks like.

After you decapitate one of the Hydras, this attack changes to a double attack. This means that the AoE slime will be larger and the damage higher.

If you take one hit from this, you’ll die! To avoid this, it’s better to wait for the slime to fall to the ground. The key is not to rush and to time the slime’s drop carefully.

The next attack will be a barrage of fire, which one of the heads will launch at you. Your task is to run and not stop. This may also be accompanied by additional attacks in the form of erupting fire (like the first time), but here you’ll have to rely on luck and the character’s abilities rather than waiting. Don’t forget about the dash, as it will be very useful at this stage. Once we decapitate the second Hydra head, the first phase ends.

Phase Two

Mio and Zoe are now on the same platform but lose the medallion they need to deal with the Hydras. You’ll need to move forward, dodging fire, with the landing spots being highlighted in advance, and a flame barrage, which will now be launched by several Hydras, not just one.

You will also encounter a wave that will throw you upwards. The key here is not to stand on Mio’s magical platform but on a wooden plank. This way, you won’t end up in the water and won’t have to start over.

When the Hydra has only one head left, it will spew 6 flames that will hover in the air and then attack you all at once. How do you dodge them, you ask? The area where they’ll land will be highlighted, so just move between the platforms. That way, you’ll avoid the attack and move forward.

We’ve won, but not Zoe’s fears, meaning that the battle with the Hydras isn’t over yet: “My Heart… Ella… I can’t…”

At first, you’ll need to dodge the Hydra heads, and then you’ll end up inside its stomach. Overall, this part is quite simple. The chapter’s ending reveals both heroines from a different side, so instead of spoiling it, we encourage you to play through it yourself!

Fighting the Hydras is an interesting battle in terms of mechanics that shows us the heroines from a different angle. Although the previous game It Takes Two didn’t emphasize psychological aspects this much, the developers decided to experiment with the format this time, adding something Nolan-esque to the game. We hope that our guide has been helpful, and we’re confident that you’ll be able to defeat the Hydras during your playthrough!
