If, over the past few years, we've stopped flinching at the words "TV show/movie based on a video game," the same can't yet be said for "live-action adaptation of an anime or manga."
The manga Claymore is getting a TV adaptation—CBS Studios and Propagate Content have announced that they are working on the project. Actor and manga fan Masi Oka will serve as a producer, with support from the Japanese publishing house Shueisha. Currently, the search is underway for a screenwriter capable of bringing Norihiro Yagi’s dark fantasy to life on screen.
Masi Oka already has experience with manga adaptations—he co-produced Netflix’s Death Note in 2017. And if you’ve seen that, you know this immediately raises a huge red flag for the project, because, let’s be honest, that adaptation was terrible. Oka claims to be a big fan of Claymore, but with a track record like that, confidence in the project isn’t exactly high.
The original Claymore manga (and its anime adaptation) is known for its dark atmosphere. The manga was serialized from 2001 to 2014 and was later adapted into an anime series. Claymore takes place in a medieval-inspired world threatened by monstrous yoma—werewolf-like creatures that feed on human flesh. The only ones who can fight them are warriors from a mysterious Organization, known as Claymores due to their massive swords. The story follows a warrior named Clare and her journey through this brutal world.
