Today starts one of the most important esports tournaments of 2024, the CS2 Shanghai Major. Here is everything you need to know.

Tournament Format

Shanghai Major is split into three stages:

  • Opening Stage (November 30 – December 3)
  • Elimination Stage (December 5 – 8)
  • Playoff Stage (December 12 – 15)

The Opening Stage consists of sixteen teams fighting each other according to Swiss system rules. This means that opponents have the same score of wins and losses. To get into the next stage, you need to achieve 3 wins without suffering 3 losses. Those who have 2 wins or 2 losses will play best-of-3 matches, in all other cases it is Bo1. As a result, eight teams qualify, eight teams get eliminated.

The Elimination Stage is played once again according to the Swiss, but, this time, eight highest seeded clubs enter the battle. Everything else is the same. Once again, half of participants will continue their battle in the next stage, the rest will be sent to de_airport.

The Playoff Stage is simple. Single Elimination bracket, best-of-3 matches and only one World Champion crowned in Shanghai.
