At a fan meetup in Cleveland, legendary series creator Ed Boon made a significant announcement: remasters of older franchise titles are just a matter of time. The only remaining uncertainty is whether NetherRealm Studios will handle development themselves or outsource to a third-party studio.

Regarding which specific games might receive updated versions, Boon listed several options currently under discussion:

According to Boon, the franchise currently has two main development paths: creating new content (likely referring to MK1 DLC) or reviving classics accumulated over the series' 30-year history.

It would be great to recreate those legendary moments with modern technology.

Particular interest arose when discussing a potential return to the photorealistic style of 90s games. Boon recalled the unfinished Mortal Kombat HD Kollection project, which used photographically detailed 3D models. Though development encountered unspecified difficulties (which Boon couldn't detail), he remains optimistic that classics like MK2 or Ultimate MK3 will eventually be reborn with modern graphics.
