During the latest State of Play, held by Sony in February of this year, one of the most significant announcements was the official reveal of Saros—a new game from Housemarque, the studio behind Returnal.

Sony acquired Housemarque in 2021 for an undisclosed sum, and at that time, Saros was already in the early stages of development. However, full-scale work on the project began only in 2022.

According to the latest information, Saros is currently in active development, and its budget is comparable to that of Alan Wake 2, which is estimated at 70 million euros, including development and marketing costs.

"Such investments would have been impossible if we had remained an independent studio", noted Ilari Kuittinen, CEO and founder of the Finnish company, in an interview.

Sony's investments in game development can be gauged by the numbers: if Housemarque's revenue in 2020 was 8.9 million euros, by March 2024, it had grown to 21.8 million euros.

Following the acquisition, Housemarque renovated and expanded its offices in Kaartinkaupunki, Helsinki, even adding its own cinema.

Saros is expected to be released in 2026 as a PS5 exclusive.
