During the highly anticipated Nintendo Direct dedicated to the Switch 2 announcement, the company presented a sensation for Zelda universe fans — the tactical action game Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment, which will serve as a canonical prequel to the events of Tears of the Kingdom.

Developed by Omega Force in collaboration with the Zelda team, the project offers:

  • Large-scale battles in the best traditions of the "musou" genre — up to 1000 enemies on screen simultaneously
  • Zelda as the central character — for the first time in the Warriors series, she will receive a unique combat skill tree
  • Deep lore immersion — the game will detail the events of the legendary Imprisonment War, only briefly mentioned in TotK
  • Expanded roster of characters — including all 7 bearers of the Secret Stones, whose stories were previously left off-screen

The project will serve as a technical showcase for Switch 2's capabilities:

  • 4K/60 FPS support in TV mode
  • Improved destruction physics and magic effects
  • Adaptive triggers on the new controller
This isn't just a spinoff, but an important part of the saga.
producer Eiji Aonuma noted in an interview with Famitsu.

The release is scheduled for winter 2025 exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2.
