Recent ESRB ratings have revealed an unexpected detail: the upcoming Mafia from Hangar 13 and Take-Two will include in-game purchases. This decision has already sparked discussions among fans of the traditionally single-player-focused franchise.

The game, rated "M" (17+), stays true to its criminal aesthetic: the ESRB description mentions extortion, shootouts involving melee and firearms, brothel visits, and explicit language. However, the "In-Game Purchases" label points to monetization—likely through cosmetics, virtual currency, or battle passes. It's important to note that this is only the organization's general classification and does not necessarily confirm the presence of premium currency or battle passes in the final product.

The absence of an "Includes Random Items" label rules out loot boxes, hinting at alternative monetization methods:

  • Story DLC similar to Mafia 3
  • Decorative elements like vehicle customization from Mafia 2

The exact form of microtransactions remains unconfirmed. More details will be revealed on May 8 during the PAX East presentation, where a gameplay trailer will debut alongside a developer panel.

According to a leak on its official Steam page, Mafia: The Old Country may release on August 8, 2025.
