EA’s Executive Vice President Vince Zampella gave an update clarifying the current status of the Need for Speed series. NFS Unbound was released more than two years ago, and since then, EA hasn’t made any new announcements about the franchise.
There’s a reason for this: Criterion Games is currently focused on developing the next Battlefield. According to Zampella, EA’s main priority right now is the new Battlefield, which the company is building with significant attention to player feedback. The project involves four different studios, and EA is going all-in on its development.
Zampella previously stated that the team wants to avoid repeating the mistakes of Battlefield 2042, which was heavily criticized at launch due to controversial gameplay decisions. This "we’re listening to the players” approach also applies to new content for NFS Unbound.
It seems likely that EA will return to Need for Speed only after the release and initial support phase of Battlefield. That might not be a bad thing—fans have been underwhelmed by recent NFS titles, and if the goal is to successfully reboot the franchise by listening to players, then giving them time to forget past disappointments and build nostalgia could be the right move.
Either way, don’t expect any Need for Speed announcements in the near future.
