In an exclusive Famitsu interview, the project's creative directors revealed key gameplay features. Players will have complete freedom to eliminate members of the "Yotei Six" in any order they choose—vengeance can be carried out in any sequence. According to the developers, this non-linear progression will allow each player to create their own unique revenge scenario.
A particularly symbolic element is the belt bearing the targets' names, which remains constantly with the protagonist. After each kill, a name is crossed out, and this costume detail remains unchanged regardless of outfit changes, emphasizing the inevitability of retribution. Sucker Punch confirmed that Ghosts of Yotei will be their largest open-world project to date, surpassing all of the studio's previous works.
When asked about changing both the protagonist and historical period, the developers explained their vision. Their goal was to create a "fresh yet organic" perspective on the Ghost of Tsushima universe. The story of Atsu is an intentional choice: a hero who initially lacks warrior status undergoes a transformation to become Onryō (a vengeful spirit). This figure, traditionally associated with female characters in Japanese folklore, adds depth and cultural authenticity to the narrative, according to the creators.
Despite some accusations of "woke agenda", Sucker Punch emphasizes that their decision stems from a commitment to authenticity. The game offers not just entertainment content, but a thoughtful historical tapestry where every element adheres to the laws of the era and Japan's cultural traditions.
