While most players will have to wait another week to finally start playing DOOM: The Dark Ages, one lucky gamer is already enjoying it thanks to a PS5 collector's edition received well ahead of schedule. After posting several images on Reddit, they shared a mini-review and revealed several new details about the game.
Having played for about 9 hours, the author praises the visual effects and gameplay:
In terms of gameplay, this is probably one of the most innovative FPS games I've ever played.
Thanks to the combination of firearms with shield parrying and melee combat, battles become incredibly engaging and never feel tedious. Additionally, every weapon feels truly unique. According to them, the mech sections make you feel like you're controlling Godzilla—destroying buildings and wreaking havoc—while the dragon sequences are highly dynamic and feature special attacks.
Other details:
- The game features 22 missions in total, and reaching the 10th mission took about 9 hours
- Some missions are significantly longer than in Doom Eternal
- An amazing story
- Stunning visuals and smooth gameplay
- The chainsaw shield is extremely useful—melee combat and parrying are crucial
- Weapons from previous games return with new modifiers: for example, the rocket launcher can now function as a grenade launcher, and the plasma rifle can switch between single and dual barrels—this applies to most, if not all, weapons
- Unique boss fights against mechs, titans, and dragons
- The game places more emphasis on cutscenes, which are better directed and more serious, yet still retain plenty of fun moments
- Solid performance at 60 FPS with ray tracing
- No high-performance 120 FPS mode
- DualSense features are supported
- The only notable flaw noticed so far is slow weapon switching
DOOM: The Dark Ages releases on May 15 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series. The review embargo lifts on May 9.
