Team Fortress 2 was a pioneer in popularizing skins as both an investment and a commodity. At 18 years old, the game has seen many traders move on to other markets—CS2 skins are the current favorite—but even now, certain hats can fetch a hefty price.
Recently, what might be the most significant transaction in the game’s history took place. An ultra-rare collectible hat was sold for over $40,000, a sum large enough to buy a decent car.
What is the most expensive item in Team Fortress 2? The spotlight is on the Crone’s Dome, a witch hat released during the 2012 Halloween event. This particular hat features the Spellbound unusual effect, unobtainable for over a decade (if we don't count a quick return eight years ago).
What makes this specific Crone’s Dome extraordinary is its rarity and customization. Only two Spellbound Crone’s Dome hats exist, but this one also includes rare additions. The hat comes with two Halloween spells: Spectral Spectrum and Headless Horseshoes—both considered highly desirable. However, its ultimate feature is a glitched Killstreak Kit. Due to a one-night bug, players could bind the Kit not only to weapons, and those who made it in time, got huge rarities.
For comparison, the rarest skin in Counter-Strike 2—a StatTrak AK-47 Case Hardened with the 661 pattern and Factory New quality—is valued at approximately $1 million.
