In its Q4 2024 financial report, AMD declared that it had achieved a significant milestone: the company had shipped more than 100 million semi-custom CPUs for game consoles.
They are being installed in popular devices such as PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 and Steam Deck.
AMD's total revenue reached a record $7.7 billion, up 24%, driven by impressive growth in its data center and client solutions segments. Data center revenue nearly doubled, while the client sector grew 52%, helping to offset the decline in the gaming industry.
CEO Lisa Su said that despite the expected further revenue decline in the gaming segment, inventory normalization and a recovery in sales of semi-custom processors will return stability.
The company plans to focus on the enthusiast segment next year with its new RDNA 4 architecture, which provides vastly improved ray tracing and support for artificial intelligence scaling to bring 4K gaming to the mainstream.
There are also plans to merge the client and gaming businesses, and moderate growth in the embedded solutions business promises to be steady. Given the popularity of portable gaming PCs and the possible release of the new Steam console, AMD's prospects look optimistic.
