Image quality has improved noticeably as a result of major advancements in DLSS 4 technology in super-resolution and ray reconstruction, including the new Vision Transformer model. Additionally, new frame generation improves performance by producing two or three intermediate frames rather than just one.
An updated version of Cyberpunk 2077 was used to test DLSS 4's performance on the RTX 5080. Improvements in DLSS 4 allowed the game to consistently deliver more than 120 frames per second at 4K resolution with path tracing enabled.
The Vision Transformer model was used to replace the outdated neural network, which was one of the biggest modifications. By lowering motion blur and ghosting and enhancing anti-aliasing and detail, it greatly increased image stability. More realistic shadows and reflections are now produced by the ray reconstruction algorithm.
The generation of frames was another significant improvement. Two and three interpolated frames are now supported by DLSS, whereas earlier iterations only used one. Performance improved by 535% and 913% with three generated frames when tested in Cyberpunk 2077 with RT Overdrive enabled and at maximum settings.
Although there was a 6 ms increase in input latency at the maximum frame generation setting, this was outweighed by a notable performance boost. Overall, DLSS 4 with RTX 5080 opens new horizons for path tracing gaming.
