Sometimes it is interesting to look back and reflect on your mistakes. In an interview discussing his departure from PlayStation, former president of SIE Shuhei Yoshida addressed the failure of the PS Vita handheld console, which sold around 15 million units.
The main reason for the failure, according to Yoshida, was Sony's lack of resources to develop multiple devices simultaneously. The PS Vita was released in 2011, when the company was still heavily supporting the PS3, and just two years later, the PS4 launched, which shifted the company's focus.
Yoshida also pointed out other factors. For instance, the proprietary memory cards for the Vita, which were more expensive for users. He also described the rear touchpad as "not necessary", as it increased production costs.
During the development of the Vita, engineers experimented with the possibility of outputting images to an external screen. However, Yoshida found the result unsatisfactory, and the feature was abandoned to reduce production costs. Yoshida praised Nintendo for the success of the Switch, believing that the company made the right decision by focusing on a single console.
