Amazon is officially working on a Pacific Rim TV series, according to Variety. We've heard some rumors about it last year, but only now it's confirmed that it’ll stream on Prime Video.
Eric Heisserer — the screenwriter behind Arrival — is the one who is busy with the development. He’ll also serve as executive producer. It’s planned as a prequel to 2013 film, directed by well-known Guillermo Del Toro, though details about the plot are still under wraps. Sources say the studio sees potential for new movies as well.
Pacific Rim follows giant mech pilots (called Jaegers) fighting Kaiju — massive monsters coming through a portal in the Pacific Ocean. The first film scored 72% on Rotten Tomatoes and made over $400 million globally. Some people thought of it as a healthy spin on the iconic Neon Genesis Evangelion anime without all that psychological strain. The 2018 sequel didn’t do as well, both critically and at the box office.
There’s already a two-season anime version of Pacific Rim available on Netflix, but this new live-action show is aiming to expand the universe in a bigger way.
