Blizzard will test various 6v6 format options in Overwatch 2. The company will do this through a series of events in the online shooter in the near future. These events will allow developers to better understand which format players prefer and what suits the game best, as announced by the game's director, Aaron Keller.

The development head stated that while his team transitioned Overwatch 2 to a 5v5 format, they are not rigidly sticking to their decision and are attentive to player dissatisfaction. According to Keller, Blizzard recognizes that the current format often faces criticism. The developers are willing to meet players halfway, which is why they plan to experiment with different modes.

Keller explained that one of the main drawbacks of the 6v6 format from the first Overwatch was the long queues, especially for DPS characters. In the updated format versions, the developers will try to avoid such issues.

It is currently unknown when experimental 6v6 modes will appear in Overwatch 2. According to Keller, developers need to prepare for their implementation to ensure that matches with more players do not cause lag on weaker PCs.
