Apple is reportedly working on a sweeping redesign of its software interfaces, marking one of the most significant updates in years. Citing insider information, Bloomberg reports that the company aims to launch a major update by the end of the year, which will dramatically alter the appearance of its OS.

Apple Set to Redefine User Interfaces with Bold OverhaulImage: pinterest.comThe changes will span a wide range of interface elements, including icons, menus, app designs, windows, and system buttons. These updates are designed to streamline navigation and improve usability, drawing heavily from the design philosophy of the Apple Vision Pro’s mixed-reality platform. By implementing these changes, Apple hopes to stimulate demand for its devices amid a slowdown in consumer spending post-pandemic.

The updates are being developed under internal codenames Luck (iOS 19 and iPadOS 19) and Cheer (macOS 16). For Mac users, this represents the most substantial interface overhaul since macOS Big Sur in 2020, while iPhone users will see their biggest update since iOS 7 in 2013. Apple is likely to provide deeper insights into these changes at its WWDC event in June, possibly diverting attention from recent setbacks in artificial intelligence development, such as the indefinite delay of a new AI-enhanced Siri version.

Apple’s primary focus is to reduce inconsistencies between its operating systems—macOS, iOS, and visionOS—without fully merging them. While other tech companies have consolidated their platforms, Apple insists that keeping distinct OS versions allows it to optimize performance for each device type. This approach also incentivizes consumers to purchase multiple Apple products instead of relying on a single device.
