While Discord is undoubtedly the biggest communication app in the gamers community, for quite some time they tried to appeal to broader masses. However, now the company is backing down from expansion plans. In their blog, the Discord team shared that they have revised their goals and decided to focus on gaming communities.

Discord has 200 million monthly users, and more than 90% of them are actively gaming, collectively spending 1.5 billion hours in games each month. The service's team decided to shift focus and abandon the ambition of making Discord an app for a broad audience. Instead, the company will concentrate on gaming communities that bring its users together.

Discord developers will work closely with game creators to integrate the service’s features where appropriate and to incorporate interactive entertainment into the application itself.

The team introduced a new design for the mobile Discord app, created with the current goals in mind. In early 2024, Discord underwent layoffs—the company, which has not turned a profit in almost ten years, laid off about 170 employees.
