Valve engineer Fletcher Dunn shared his excitement on social media about using ChatGPT, which helped him with Deadlock.

According to Dunn, he approached the chatbot with a description of a hypothetical matchmaking algorithm and requested something similar. In response, ChatGPT provided a description of an existing algorithm that matched the given specifications. This algorithm, known as the Hungarian Algorithm, is now used in Deadlock.

Artificial intelligence has been utilized by video game developers for quite a while. However, the focus is often on the misuse of generative AI for creating artwork, assets, or replacing real actors. Dunn’s experience, along with that of other technical developers, highlights how AI is used behind the scenes — something most players may not be aware of.

As for Deadlock, the game is still far from the release state. Many things can possibly change, but the game still has the peaks of around 100,000 concurrent players.
