Unreal Engine 5 has brought exciting new capabilities to gaming, but its performance on PCs has been a point of concern. The engine demands a level of power that was not available in the GPUs of its time, posing challenges for developers. While consoles like PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S can accelerate data processing, many processes on PCs are still slowed down due to bottlenecks in data transfer.
Developer Brian Himskerck highlighted in a podcast that the best way to improve performance at this stage is by enhancing interface speeds and processor power. Until these improvements are realized, games running on Unreal Engine 5 may struggle to perform optimally, even on high-end PCs. Issues such as slow shader compilation require developer intervention, and Epic Games is actively working to address them. Ideally, the engine will operate at its fullest potential only with the RTX 6000 series of graphics cards.
For now, despite ongoing improvements, Unreal Engine 5 is likely to remain inconsistent on most devices until the next generation of PCs or consoles arrives. This highlights the need for advancements in both hardware and software to fully harness the engine's capabilities.
