Firaxis held an extensive gameplay presentation for Sid Meier's Civilization VII, where they provided a detailed look at the game and discussed the gameplay features of the seventh installment in the series.

The game will feature three major eras: Antiquity, the Age of Exploration, and Modernity. These eras will differ significantly from those in previous games in the series, as they will be "longer than in previous editions" and much more distinctly separated from each other. One of the key differences in the seventh installment is the ability to "mix" leaders and different civilizations.

Leaders are no longer tied to a specific civilization, allowing players to freely choose who they want as the head of their state. Moreover, leaders can be leveled up, enhancing their attributes and specialization. As players enter a new age (of which there will be several in Civilization VII), they will need to choose traits that will carry over with them into the next era. This will affect not only the leaders but also the state and even the gameplay. Not all learned traits can be carried forward—some will be left behind in the "evolutionary process".

The visual style of the game will be somewhere between the "realistic" look of Civilization V and the "cartoony" style of Civilization VI.

Civilization VII will be released on PC, two generations of PlayStation and Xbox consoles, as well as the Nintendo Switch, on February 11, 2025.
