Even though GeoGuessr can be played directly in a browser and has a dedicated fanbase along with its own popular competitions, launching on Steam always seemed like an obvious move. Many players who are used to Steamās ecosystem rarely look elsewhere.
So itās no surprise that GeoGuessr is now launching a dedicated Steam client, with early access opening next month.
GeoGuessr is a geography quiz game where players are randomly placed in an unknown location on a map and must pinpoint their exact position as accurately as possible. Success depends on attention to detail and geography knowledge. Winning games boosts player rankings, allowing them to compete against stronger opponents.
In the free version of GeoGuessr Steam Edition, players will have unlimited access to the casual ranked division and duels with friends. Unlocking other game modes will require a special pass, though its price has yet to be announced. Importantly, crossplay will be available between the Steam and browser versions, but the pass wonāt transfer between platforms.
The developers have promised to expand the game during early access by adding new modes and content. The release date for Version 1.0 is still unknown.

That said, Iām wondering if thereāll be a free option with ads, considering many have already moved to free alternatives like FreeGuessr.com. With Google API fees going up as the game grew, itās clear they need a reliable income. But with Valve's no-ads policy, subscriptions may be their only optionāunless they've found a way to work around it, or theyāre counting on Steam sales to cover the rising costs?
