Three years ago, Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy — The Definitive Edition made headlines for all the wrong reasons, facing heavy criticism for poor graphics and the removal of some features which were present in original games. One of these was the atmospheric lighting. Now, it is available not only on Mobile platforms but on PC and consoles as well.

This update, released three years after the trilogy's launch, includes a "classic" lighting option as its main feature. This setting, enabled by default, can be turned off to revert to the previous look. The updated lighting aims to bring back the atmosphere of PS2, most notably in GTA: San Andreas.

As there’s no official patch notes list, gamers decided to uncover changes on their own. They found that the update corrected denim texture rendering, added clouds high in the sky, and improved character animations. Additional adjustments include tweaks to water movement speed and swimming mechanics. Moreover, in GTA III and Vice City, players can now sprint while holding shotguns, rifles, and flamethrowers. OG titles allowed sprinting only with light or melee weapons.

Despite its rocky start, The Trilogy has been downloaded over 30 million times by Netflix subscribers. On Steam, the games now hold mostly positive reviews, as most critical bugs have been fixed, making the collection a great way for less discerning players to revisit these classic titles.
