Reviews for Metaphor: ReFantazio appeared on October 7, four days before the game's release. The average score for the JRPG on Metacritic is 94 out of 100, based on 31 reviews.

Reviewers have hailed Metaphor: ReFantazio as one of the best JRPGs in history. Critics note that the game offers a captivating 100-hour adventure that draws players in from the beginning and holds their attention until the very end. According to them, developers took the best elements of Persona 5 and managed to improve upon them.

While Metaphor: ReFantazio is easily recognizable as an Atlus JRPG, there's also some division over the game's resemblance to Persona. While some appreciate the similarities, others were less enthusiastic about the overlap in certain details. Nonetheless, the developers combined the best gameplay features of Persona and enhanced them with additional mechanics, creating a much larger and more epic story.

Some reviewers pointed out the game's lengthy duration as a potential drawback — completing it will take hundreds of hours, and not everyone can afford to invest that much time into a single game. Additionally, some feel that the story lacks subtlety, though this shortcoming is compensated by its emotional depth and epic scale.

Metaphor: ReFantazio is set to release on October 11 for PC, PS5, PS4, and Xbox Series X|S.
