Interesting information about the massive layoffs at Microsoft, which became known a few days ago, continues to emerge (you can read more about it here).
As it turns out, the Activision Blizzard division responsible for esports suffered significantly as a result of the layoffs. About 80% of all employees were fired from there. According to information from the social networks of former employees, only 12 people remained working in the department, whereas there were 60 before!
In particular, the department responsible for the esports aspect of Overwatch was hit hard by the massive layoffs. For instance, the well-known figure in the gaming community, Soe Gschwind Penski (known as Soembie), who served as a commentator at professional Overwatch tournaments, was also laid off.

The assistant director of the Overwatch League, Matt Morello, could not avoid the cuts either.

Camera operators for the Call of Duty League and Overwatch League were completely laid off.
It is still unknown whether the cuts affected other esports departments, but Activision Blizzard does not intend to completely abandon the esports direction for its games.
