Rumors about this project first emerged in June 2023. At the time, reports indicated that Microsoft was fully funding the game's development by People Can Fly, with a budget of $30 to $50 million, and that the project would be based on one of Xbox's existing franchises.
For a long time, details remained scarce, but recently People Can Fly updated the "About Us" section on their corporate website for investors, where they revealed the nature of Project Maverick. As it turns out, this is the previously announced Gears of War: E-Day. However, this comes as no surprise—back in January, it was revealed that the studio was collaborating with The Coalition on a new Gears of War installment.
According to the investor section, People Can Fly is currently working on seven projects simultaneously. These include:
- Gemini — a new AAA project in partnership with Square Enix
- Maverick (Gears of War: E-Day) — a collaborative effort with Microsoft
- Echo — a game mode for an existing Krafton project
- Bifrost and Victoria (Lost Rift) — self-published titles by the studio
The upcoming game will serve as a prequel to the main series, depicting events that occurred 14 years before the original story began.
