Microsoft has submitted a patent application for the creation and modification of game stories through the use of generative artificial intelligence. The 2024-registered patent outlines methods for enabling developers and players to alter game events through text queries.
The system can work in existing games such as Minecraft. Players will be able to enter commands to generate new game rules, NPCs, or completely unique story elements. For example, new characters could be added or game rules could be reworked upon request.
Patents often remain theoretical concepts and don't always find their way into real-world products. But this move demonstrates the direction Microsoft plans to take the technology.
The company has long been betting on AI, investing billions of dollars in OpenAI. In 2024, the head of its AI gaming division, Haiyan Zhang, said AI should complement developers, not replace them.
Other major studios are also exploring this area. For example, at Investor Day 2024, Electronic Arts showed a concept where players can create a game world based on requests, generating “cardboard worlds,” for example.
Opinions on the use of AI in games are divided. Brian Fargo, head of inXile Entertainment, expressed doubts that AI can replace humans in creating quality stories and characters.
