The biggest chess drama in recent months has been the so-called JeansGate—a scandal over Magnus Carlsen being banned from playing in the World Rapid and Blitz Championship because he was wearing jeans.
This sparked a massive controversy, the effects of which are still being felt today. The relationship between arguably the greatest chess player of all time and FIDE, the International Chess Federation, is at an all-time low. However, the Norwegian grandmaster has found a way to turn this situation into something positive—Magnus has put the infamous Corneliani jeans up for auction.
Although the original price of the jeans was around $500, the current bid has already surpassed $7,500, with nine days still left in the auction. All proceeds from the sale will go to charity.
Recently, Magnus Carlsen joined Team Liquid and will represent the organization at the Esports World Cup and its qualifiers. The Norwegian GM is also actively promoting Freestyle Chess, a format where the starting position is randomized among 960 possible setups.
